Will liquidation affect my personal credit score?

Directors worry about this a lot, often more than they need to. The honest answer separates two things: the company's record, and your personal record.

The starting point — separate records

A company's credit record and your personal credit record are separate in South Africa. The company's liquidation appears on the company's record. It does not, by itself, appear on your personal credit profile.

For directors who didn't sign personal sureties and whose personal credit was kept separate from the business, liquidation of the company may have no direct impact on personal credit at all.

What changes things — personal sureties

The most common way company liquidation ends up affecting personal credit is through unpaid personal sureties. If you signed surety for a company debt that isn't fully paid in the liquidation, the creditor can pursue you personally. If you can't pay, a judgment can be entered against you — and that appears on your personal credit profile.

This is why identifying and planning for personal sureties at the start of a liquidation matters so much. Where significant sureties exist, a follow-on personal sequestration deals with them as part of the strategy, rather than letting them turn into a string of personal judgments.

What changes things — personal sequestration

If you do go through personal sequestration (which is separate from company liquidation), that does appear on your personal credit record. The listing remains until you are rehabilitated, after which it is removed from the credit bureaus.

Subtle impacts

Even where there are no sureties, a thorough credit assessment by a future lender may take into account that you were a director of a liquidated company. This isn't a formal credit record entry; it's a due diligence question. Many lenders won't ask; some will. How you describe what happened matters.

What you can do

The honest summary

Liquidation by itself — done cleanly, no sureties triggering, no personal sequestration following — has limited direct impact on personal credit. Where sureties trigger or sequestration follows, the impact is significant but manageable, and rehabilitation eventually restores you fully.
